For the purpose of this blog, a case study has been examined in order to provide relevant resources for particular characteristics of Autism. Henry (name has been changed) is an eight year old boy with Autism, who struggles to communicate his wants and needs as effectively as the other students in his mainstream class. He enjoys art activities, but struggles when completing mathematics or literacy-based tasks. Henry has difficulties interacting with his peers and does not understand the consequences of bad behaviour such as lashing out when he does not get his own way. Henry is fixated on dinosaurs, and also struggles to retain information and understand time management.
This blog will cover five main issues in relation to Henry’s particular characterstics of Autism. These five issues are:
- Social interactions- difficulties during group work, particularly in turn taking and using manners
- Challenging behaviours
- Difficulty transitioning between tasks, especially from Maths to English
- Difficulty remembering instructions, particularly during literacy rotations
- Limited communication of wants and needs
Each of these issues will be discussed and ideas of example resources will be provided for each section.
This blog also contains a reflection section, that contains my personal thoughts on what I have learnt from creating this blog and my personal growth as an educator.
